Heroes Of Education

Heroes Of Education

A few nights ago I was given the chance to attend the 2017 Heroes of Education Dinner. This is where is many great leaders and contributors give back to Maricopa Community Colleges. It was amazing how I was able to see the backside of how scholarships and grants work from the generous amount of people around the state.

The night began with great energy!

With a room filled with well over 500 people. I had the honor of sitting at the table with High ranking officials from wells fargo, the Ceo of NAACP, and the CEO of the Hispanics Women's Corporation just to name a few. I felt as if the evening was be filled with many wide eye moments and it did not disappoint.  I heard  from two scholarship recipients both which were very touching. First up on the platform was Lauren Knickerbocker from Glendale Community College. She was an army vet who had served our country during in Afghanistan.  Her story was one that anyone could choke up on. She witnessed her best friend killed in the line of duty, but that didn't deter her by any means. If anything she pushed forward. She is not in block 1 for her nursing degree. What an amazing woman and to say anything more about her would be an understatement. So Lauren if you read this anyone thank you once again for your service and God Bless!

Second up on the stage was Christopher Figueroa. He was from the inner city of LA! Surrounded by gang life, drugs and a negative lifestyle. He saw 3 of this uncles all killed from the street life. He knew a turning point was when he saw his beloved uncle killed. He knew he had to get out and pursue a life which wouldn't leave down a path or destruction for himself. His story was one that I could relate. Growing up in the inner city of Phoenix and witnessing friends being killed and becoming statistics. I wanted more so with his story I related so much and see the happiness, success and joy he is now living. He is now a current academic advisor for Paradise Valley Community College.

The night continued with a live auction. This is where many of the audience were bidding for nights at the Phoenician, Scottsdale and Biltmore resorts. All the proceeds from the night were going right back into the scholarships for many more students!

The night ended with a woman who was honored by the entire Heroes of Education Dr. Ioanna Morfessis, "Morfessis has devoted 30 years to helping business, institutions and communities create and execute change and growth strategies. Regarded as one of the nation’s top economic development visionaries, she founded and led three best-of-class economic development organizations in the U.S., including the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. Her work contributed to 300 successful business locations and expansions that generated 250,000 direct new jobs and over $30 billion in private capital investment.  She also has been internationally recognized for her innovative work in life sciences and technology-based developments and programs, and for her ability to forge enduring and effective private-public alliances between business, government and education."- Maricopa  Community College News
